Bio: I am a first generation refugee from a small village in Guatemala that comes from indigenous mayan family. At just ten months old my mother decided to move to the United States to escape persecution and poverty that many indigenous people were facing. They had hoped that their new born child would not have live in a country were she would not have opportunities because her family. However, what my family and I soon found out that reaching the American Dream brought not only new open opportunities but new obstacles. As a Guatemalan-American these are my stories of trying to find the balance between keeping my Guatemalan traditions and makings my new American ones.
